ENGL 467: Topics in Rhetoric and Writing

Environmental Rhetoric ~ Dr. Peters

In ENGL 467 Environmental Rhetoric, we’ll identify the main rhetorical stances of environmental discourse. Through several case studies, we’ll investigate how these stances shape how we think, talk, and act in relation to place. We’ll examine how environmental rhetoric frames local, state, and federal legislation, civil discourse, political activism, and protest. And we’ll explore strategies for adopting and adapting these stances when engaging with thorny environmental problems. The course includes guest speakers from The Land Conservancy and the City of SLO’s office of natural resources and sustainability, and it includes optional field visits to various sites in the SLO Creek watershed.
