ENGL 495: World Englishes ~ Professor Moretti

World Englishes focuses on the spread of and adaptation of English by diverse speakers in various communities.  Students will consider the historical development as well as the political, economic, and social factors that have contributed to the emergence of indigenous and hybrid Englishes.  They also will describe and analyze the linguistic features of these varieties.

Particular attention will be paid to three issues within various communities: Which English is taught (or learned)?  By whom?  And for what purposes?  Students will be asked to consider English related language policy and planning challenges abroad, in the US, and in California.
