ENGL 461/470: Senior Project/Selected Advanced Topics

Editing and Publishing: Artifact ~ Dr. Martinez

Next fall we are launching a pilot course sequence in Editing & Publishing. Many grads have benefitted from the skills they acquired working on Byzantium so we have decided to reformulate the structure of Byzantium into a senior project three-course sequence to encourage broader participation in micropublishing.

  • The first class will be offered in Fall 2022 as 461-02; you will need approval to enroll. In Fall students will be introduced to "The Field" of editing and publishing as they develop the collective vision for the publications they hope to work on collectively for their senior projects.
  • In Winter 2023, the second class in the sequence will be offered an ENGL 470 Course on "The Practice" of micropublishing, including soliciting submissions, grant writing, and fundraising.
  • In Spring 2023, the third course in the sequence will also be offered as an ENGL 470 course, but will focus on "The Artifact" and will culminate in a micropublication to be submitted to Cal Poly Digital Commons along with a physical artifact produced out of the new Book Arts Lab.

Those interested in completing a senior project in micropublishing and gaining hands-on editing and publishing experience should plan take each of the 3 courses in the sequence.  Send any questions or clarifications to Dr. Shanae Martinez.
