ENGL 439: From Hampshire to Hollywood: Jane Austen Fiction and Film ~ Dr. Allen

“From Hampshire to Hollywood: Jane Austen Fiction and Film” examines five of Austen's novels and their cinematic adaptations with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our class will first consider the power dynamics of economic class, social rank, and gender in Regency England both within the texts and around their productions. We will then look at the stories in the broader cultural contexts they have gained through modern film, TV, and web adaptations, which expand these power dynamics to issues of nationality, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Students will also complete a creative group assignment where they plan their own modern cinematic adaptation of an Austen novel.
