From the Chair
Rummell and Waitinas with students
at the Senior Project Showcase
The 2017-2018 academic year was an exciting and event-filled year for the English Department! Readings by three nationally acclaimed writers (George Saunders, Robert Hass and Robert Olen Butler) were highlights of the year. Our students and faculty continue to impress and inspire by earning awards and fellowships, and we sponsored our first-ever Senior Project Showcase so students could share their fabulous projects.
In our continuing efforts to better connect with alumni and students, we sponsored two student public relations interns this year — Han Choi and Rebecca Gates. Some of their accomplishments include increasing our social media presence, especially through Twitter and Instagram, as well as promoting and documenting departmental events. The interns were so successful that we’ll be continuing the tradition next year.
With the help of our interns and Advisory Board, our Career Connections Program went digital this year. We formed a LinkedIn Group to help English alumni and students to more easily connect. If you’d like to join this group, connect with me on LinkedIn and let me know.
As we look to next year, we see a temporary change in college and departmental leadership. Our College of Liberal Arts Dean Doug Epperson is retiring, and I’ve been asked to assume the interim dean position while we search for a permanent replacement. I begin my new role on August 16. The English Department remains in good hands, though, with Catherine Waitinas as the interim department chair for the year. Please join me in congratulating and thanking her for assuming this position! I will miss chairing the department for the year, but I’m excited by this opportunity to grow and learn.
