Blended B.A. + M.A. Program Application

To apply to the new Blended (B.A. + M.A.) Program in English, please complete all fields below and click Submit.

Note: this admission cycle is open only to students who are currently completing their second year at Cal Poly; third- and fourth-year students are not eligible to apply.

In addition to completing this application, you must have two faculty members submit brief letters of recommendation on your behalf; at least one of these must be from a faculty member in the English Department. Recommenders will submit their letters directly to Ryan Hatch, Director of Graduate Studies, either as e-mail attachments (rahatch@calpoly.edu) or via campus mail.

Both the completed application form and letters of recommendation must be submitted to by 11:59 p.m., Friday, March 15. Admissions decisions, made in consultation with members of the Graduate Program Committee, will be announced near the beginning of the spring quarter. We expect to be able to admit up to five students to the first Blended cohort.

The statement of purpose is your opportunity to articulate both why you want to join the Blended program and why you think you are a particularly strong candidate for admission. In roughly 500 words, explain how earning a dual B.A. / M.A. in English at Cal Poly would help you to achieve your personal and professional goals, and what your presence would contribute to this new program. Your writing sample should be a formal scholarly essay in the field of English studies (this includes literature, composition and rhetoric, technical and professional communication, linguistics, and literary criticism and theory) that demonstrates your capacity to think critically; analyze and interpret texts; make compelling claims and arguments; and write lucid and complex prose. Please upload your statement and writing sample as a single PDF document, and name the document [yourlastname]blendedapp.pdf (so, for instance, Annie Nguyen will name her document nguyenblendedapp.pdf.).
