Cal Poly Creative Writers to Read at Byzantium Celebration May 23
Cal Poly’s English Department will hold a reading and a celebration for the 26th edition of Byzantium, the department’s literary annual, at 7 p.m. Monday, May 23, at Steynberg Gallery in San Luis Obispo.
Byzantium, an award-winning publication, is entirely crafted by undergraduate students. Co-editors Marley McCaughey and Stephanie Narlesky collaborated with art director Lena Choi, an art and design major, to produce this edition.
“The unveiling will be a night to immerse yourselves in some of the finest student literary talent our campus has to offer,” said McCaughey, an English and history double major.
Cal Poly English Professor Kevin Clark, longtime Byzantium advisor, called the event “an equivalent celebration of extraordinary student accomplishment in the literary arts.”
Poems and stories were chosen through the 2016 Al Landwehr Creative Writing Contest, which is open to undergraduate and graduate students in all majors. Two English Department faculty judging committees — one for poetry and one for fiction — read anonymous entries and awarded first, second and third place prizes. The co-editors of the journal selected the editors’ choice pieces.
“The caliber of this year's works far exceeded my expectations,” said English senior Narlesky.
Selected winners will read excerpts from their pieces at the event, which is free and open to the public. All winners this year are English majors.
The 2016 winners are:
