English as a Second Language

The Cal Poly Composition Program is committed to placing students into writing courses that will best support them. Each student brings with him or her unique backgrounds and skills that sometimes should be accounted for when courses are selected. Students for whom English is a second language may want to consider taking writing classes that are intended to address their needs and talents.

To decide if such a writing course will benefit you, please consider the following:

  • Do you speak a language other than English at home?
  • Do your parents speak a language other than English at home?
  • Did your previous instructors suggest that you might benefit from second-language support?
  • Do you struggle when reading long, complex texts that are written in English?

If you are interested in taking a course that supports second-language students, please see the descriptions of our second-language composition courses.

If you have any additional questions about these writing courses, please contact , the Director of Writing.
