Second Language Composition Courses

Incoming Second-Language Students who score under 146 on the EPT should consider enrolling in:  

ENGL 113: Essay Writing/ESL

In this course, students practice writing with special attention paid to the writing process. The instructor will focus on using details and examples for effective development and will review grammar problems specific to ESL students.   Students will also develop reading by focusing on directed readings of essays and fiction. Students who complete this course will automatically move into ENGL 133.

Students who have completed ENGL 113 or Second-Language Students who need to complete GE Area A1 should consider enrolling in: 

ENGL 133: Writing and Rhetoric for English as a Second Language Students

This class addresses the needs of writers whose first language is one other than English and who may need additional support when writing in English.  The course also provides instruction in writing issues appropriate for English as a Second Language student. The course fulfills the GE Area A1 requirement.  

We also offer an advanced composition course for Second-Language Students: 

ENGL 301: Advanced Composition for Second Language Students

Students study and critically analyze expository and argumentative essays. The course emphasizes rhetorical, stylistic, and grammatical problems specific to second-language speakers. Students will also have an opportunity to take the Graduation Writing Exam.
