The American Scholar Prize - Information and Application

The American Scholar Prize was created and is funded by Dr. Linda Halisky, a former English Department faculty member and College of Liberal Arts dean. The prize recognizes a junior English major who is "lit up by literature."

The annual American Scholar Prize is a $500 prize awarded to a Cal Poly English major who meets the following criteria:

•    Interest in literature and language – someone who is “lit up” by literature

•    Minimum 3.2 grade point average

•    Junior standing, or senior standing (seniors with at least two quarters left to graduation preferred)

To be considered for this prize, interested students should submit a response to the following questions on a separate sheet of paper.  Please attach responses to this application.

1.   In 300 words or less, describe how you are “lit up” by literature.

2.   In 150 words or less, describe how this award will support your financial needs as a student.

Please submit this application with attached responses directly to the English Department by Friday, April 17, 2015.

The winner will be notified mid-May, and the prize will be awarded at the English Department June graduation ceremony on Sunday, June 14, 2015.
